Using AnyClient, how do I use WebDAV to upload files to my Oncourse CL Resources?

On this page:

Introduction

WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) allows you to upload and download large files (over 200MB), multiple files, or folders full of files to your course or project site more easily.

AnyClient is recommended for Windows Vista, as other WebDAV options do not work reliably with Oncourse CL. The AnyClient software is available for download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux/Solaris; you can also use it on the web, regardless of operating system. For other modes of connecting to WebDAV, see Uploading files to Resources using WebDAV with Windows XP or Vista and Uploading files to Resources using WebDAV with Mac OS X.

Note: WebDAV is not available for use with Guest accounts.

Before you set up WebDAV, at least one object (i.e., file or folder) must be in the destination Resources tool. For help, see Resources.

Saving files directly to WebDAV (i.e., from within an application, such as Word, Excel, or Internet Explorer) does not work reliably. For best results, save the file to your computer first, and then upload it to your site.

Note: Filenames that include certain characters cannot be accepted. For a list of unsupported characters, see Unsupported characters.

The quota for a course site or project site is 1GB, and the limit for individual file uploads is 200MB unless you use WebDAV. To request a larger quota for your site, see What are the default disk quotas for UITS accounts, and how do I request an increase?

Connecting to your site's Resources

Once you have AnyClient running by one of the two methods above, you will see two columns; the one on the left is your local system, and the one on the right is the remote system.

To connect to your site's Resources:

  1. At the bottom of the page, click Connect.

  2. In the bottom left corner of the Connect dialog box, click New.

  3. A directory called NewSite will appear in the "Site Manager" column; you can give this a meaningful name if you want to.

  4. Under "General", click in the "Host" field, and enter a URL that points to the destination Resources tool.
    • To connect to a site's Resources, enter the following URL, replacing siteID with the appropriate siteID: https://oncourse.iu.edu/dav/siteID/
    • To connect to your personal Resources (in My Workspace), enter one of the following URLs (both will work), replacing username with your Indiana University Network ID username: https://oncourse.iu.edu/dav/user/username https://oncourse.iu.edu/dav/~username

Alternatively, to find the URL you need, go to Resources in the site you want to connect to (or in My Workspace), and click Upload-Download Multiple Resources. The URL that appears on that page will point to the relevant Resources tool.

Note: For instructions on finding your siteID, see Determining your site's siteID.

  5. Fill in your Network ID credentials in the "Username" and "Password" fields.

  6. From the "Connection type" drop-down list, choose WebDAV.

  7. Click Connect.

After a few seconds, the "Remote System" column on the right will display the resources in your course or project site. Navigate into folders by double-clicking them. Click to select the file or folder you want to copy, and click the arrows ( >>  or  << ) to copy it to the destination location.

When you have finished copying files, click Disconnect.
