How private are Imail and Umail accounts?

IU students have two options for email and other online communication services: Imail (powered by Microsoft) and Umail (powered by Google).

At times, legitimate reasons may exist for persons other than the account holder to access email content (e.g., to ensure the continued confidentiality, integrity, and availability of email systems and operations, or when responding to valid legal requests). Indiana University, Microsoft, and Google each have privacy policies that seek to balance individual freedom and privacy against the need to serve or protect other core values and operations, or to meet a legal requirement.

In accessing or granting access to your accounts on Imail or Umail, personnel at IU, Microsoft, and Google will comply with all applicable laws and policies. Information outlining situations when a user's stored data may be accessed, who may access it, and what permissions are necessary before that access takes place are available at Privacy of Electronic Information and Information Technology Resources.
