Login is for authorized groups (e.g., UITS, OVPIT, and TCC) that need access to specialized Knowledge Base documents. Otherwise, simply use the Knowledge Base without logging in.

What is Password Safe, and how can I install and use it?

Password Safe is an open source tool for passphrase vaulting. It is available for Windows.

Installation

  1. Go to the Password Safe site.

  2. Click Secure your passwords now! .

  3. On the following page, the installation program for Password Safe should automatically start to download. If prompted to download or save the program, do so.

  4. Run the program to begin installation.

Creating a database

  1. Start Password Safe, and then click New Database.

  2. Choose a location to save the new database, and then enter a safe combination.

  3. To add an entry, either go to the Edit menu and select Add Entry, or click Add New Entry in the toolbar.

  4. For each entry, you will have to provide the following information:

    • Group: This is a single name for organizing multiple entries.
    • Title: This is a descriptive name for the entry.
    • Username
    • Password: This can also be a passphrase.
    • Notes
    • URL: This is the location of the password- or passphrase-protected site.
    • Autotype: You can leave this field blank; for more information, see the "Autotype" help topic within Password Safe.

  5. To save the database, click the Save Database toolbar button (with an image of a disk), and then choose a location to store the database.

Using Password Safe

The Password Safe Autotype feature allows users to enter username and passphrase information quickly and easily with a single click, as follows:

  1. Open the web site or service to which you need to log in.

  2. Place the cursor in the form's "Username:" field.

  3. Open Password Safe, and then select a passphrase entry.

  4. Click Perform Autotype in the toolbar.
