ARCHIVED: In Windows XP with no service packs, how do I get the Automatic Updates client needed to use the IU Microsoft Update Service?

Windows XP with no service packs (SPs) contains a version of Automatic Updates that cannot update itself or get updates from the IU Microsoft Update Service.

The self-updating Automatic Updates client is available in the following operating systems:

  • Windows XP with SP1 or SP2
  • Windows 2000 with SP3 or SP4
  • Windows Server 2003

Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP systems without SP1 or SP2 installed. UITS recommends that you install SP2 for Windows XP, as it automatically installs the Automatic Updates client that can use the IU Microsoft Update Service.

If you have Windows XP without any service packs and exceptional circumstances prevent you from installing SP1 or SP2, you can still get updates. To do so, install the Indiana University Microsoft Update client from IUware at the following URL:
