Reading your Exchange mail using a desktop email client

Outlook is the most common client used to access an Exchange account. For full use of calendars, scheduling, and other features, you must use Outlook. However, simply to read email, you can use all of the graphical clients listed below as IMAP clients. Click the appropriate link for configuration instructions:

Outlook Outlook 2007
Outlook 2000, 2002, or 2003
Outlook (IMAP)

Outlook Web Access (OWA) Windows Mac OS X
Outlook Express/Entourage Windows Entourage 2008 and 2004/Mac OS X
Mozilla Thunderbird Windows Mac OS X
Mac OS X Mail   Mac OS X
Windows Mail (for Windows Vista) Windows
Eudora Windows Mac OS X

While UITS has tested the programs listed above and supports their use, other email clients may work as well. For general instructions, see If my desktop email client is not covered in the Knowledge Base, how do I configure it to work with IU email systems?

Note: If you use Outlook or handheld synchronization software and connect to Indiana University via an outside Internet service provider (ISP), you must establish a VPN connection before connecting to your Exchange mailbox. See At IU, using an outside ISP, why can't I connect to my Exchange account with Outlook or BlackBerry Desktop Manager?
