At IU, why am I having trouble accessing some services, and what can I do about it?
At Indiana University, if you are having trouble accessing a secure service, such as Oncourse CL, IU Webmail, CAS, or OneStart, check the following:
- Visit the IT Notices
page. The trouble you are experiencing may be part
of a larger but temporary system problem. System outages, downtimes,
and maintenance are all listed here, along with information about when
the relevant services will again be available.
- Be sure that you have properly entered your login information
(i.e., your Network ID).
- Use the Passphrase Maintenance utility to synchronize
your passphrases; see At IU, how do I change or synchronize my Network ID passphrase?
- Some versions of Internet Explorer may cause access
problems. Installing the most recent updates for your web
browser may resolve the problem. You might also try using a
different browser entirely (e.g., if you were using Internet Explorer,
try Mozilla Firefox). For information about browser requirements, see
About OneStart and web browsers, About the Student Center in OneStart, and To access Oncourse CL, which web browser should I use?
- Some spyware and peer-to-peer file sharing software
packages may cause errors when accessing Oncourse CL or IU Webmail; for
more detailed information, see On my PC, why am I having network problems after installing file-sharing software? and What is CommonName software, and how do I remove it?
UITS recommends that you install and use Windows Defender to remove such spyware programs; see What is Windows Defender and how do I use it?
- Some security software packages as well as newer web browsers include a feature called pop-up blocking, which reduces the number of windows that open when browsing web sites. Pop-up blockers alter the JavaScript code of the web page before it is displayed in your web browser. If you have pop-up blocking enabled, and you experience oddities interacting with a web page, disable the pop-up blocker and reload the page.
