In Windows XP or Vista, how can I save my computer's configuration for use in a System Restore?

In Windows XP and Vista, the System Restore feature automatically creates restore points at certain intervals. These points can be used to restore your system to a previously working state. You may want to manually create a restore point if, for example, you are about to install new software or hardware.

To manually create a restore point:

  1. From the Start menu, select All Programs or Programs, and then select Accessories, then System Tools, and then System Restore.

  2. Select Create a restore point and click Next.

  3. Type a name for the restore point, and then click Create.

  4. When the point has been created, click Close.
