In Mac OS X, how can I make my clock more accurate?

You can improve the clock's accuracy in Mac OS X by synchronizing the clock with a centralized time server. You can use the default NTP server provided by Apple, or use Indiana University's time server or a public server. For a list of public time servers, see: http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html

If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can synchronize with a time server through the Date & Time system preference:

Mac OS X 10.3.x

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .

  2. In System Preferences, from the View menu, select Date & Time.

  3. Select the Date & Time tab, then check the box next to Set Date & Time automatically: .

  4. From the pull-down menu immediately to the right, select an NTP server, or type your server's address. IU's time server is: ntp.indiana.edu

Mac OS X 10.1.x and 10.2.x

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .

  2. In System Preferences, from the View menu, select Date & Time.

  3. Click the Network Time tab, then select the checkbox next to Use a network time server.

  4. In the "NTP Server:" field, you may select one of the default NTP servers provided, or type your server's address. IU's time server is: ntp.indiana.edu
  5. Click the Set Time Now button.
