For Mac OS X, what is Aqua?

Aqua is the name Apple has given to the Mac OS X graphical user interface (GUI). Controls are brighter and more colorful than in previous versions of the OS. Buttons indicate active or non-active status by glowing or dimming, icons render more sharply, and drop shadows give windows greater depth. Some of Aqua's important features include:

  • The Finder: The Finder has been outfitted with a completely new interface in Mac OS X. The boxes at the edges of windows which allowed you to close, resize, or collapse them have been replaced by three colored buttons in the upper left corner of a window which close (red) or resize (green) it, or move it to the Dock (yellow). The Finder also features a new browse mode for navigating the hard drive which allows you to see the hierarchy of folders and files more easily than in the list and icon modes.

  • The Dock: The Dock is a new addition to Mac OS X. It combines features of the Launcher and the Application menu from older versions of the operating system, and descends from the NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP Dock. The Dock displays the icons for all running applications and provides a space to bookmark frequently used applications, documents, and folders, including the Trash. You may also place open windows there. While an application is launching, its icon bounces in the Dock. Once it is running, a triangle will appear beneath its icon. You can easily switch between applications by clicking the icons in the Dock.

  • Icons: The icons in Mac OS X are larger and more photo-realistic than in previous versions of the OS. Mac OS X supports icons up to 128x128 pixels, which allows for sharper graphic representation of objects used as icons, as well as better document previews in the Finder.
