Information about uninstalling Symantec/Norton AntiVirus in Windows
Note: If you wish to uninstall Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV), be sure that you safely replace it with a new antivirus program; see In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?
Several components are installed with all SAV/NAV software versions, and each must be removed in order for your uninstall to be successful. An incomplete uninstall can result in an error message that SAV/NAV is already installed (when you attempt to install a new version), or you may simply be unable to run LiveUpdate.
- To completely uninstall SAV/NAV, see In Windows, how do I uninstall programs? Be sure to
disable any real-time monitoring (e.g., Auto-Protect). You will then
need to remove any of the following programs, and any other programs
beginning with either "Symantec" or "Norton":
Norton AntiVirus Norton AntiVirus 2004/2005 LiveUpdate Norton AntiVirus Professional 2004 LiveAdvisor Norton AntiVirus 3, 5, and 10 User Pack 2004/2005 Norton AntiSpam Norton SystemWorks 2004/2004 Professional Edition Norton Ghost Norton SystemWorks 2005/2005 Premier Edition Norton GoBack Norton Password Manager 2004 Norton Internet Security Norton Internet Security 2004/2005 Norton SystemWorks Norton Internet Security 5 and 10 User Pack 2004/2005 Symantec pcAnywhere Norton Personal Firewall 2004/2005 Symantec Ghost Norton AntiSpam 2004/2005 Norton PartitionMagic Ghost 2003 or Ghost Version 9.0 WinFax PRO Symantec Endpoint Protection ACT!
- If, after using the Add/Remove programs feature, any programs in
the left column above are still on your computer, refer to the Symantec support
page for further information. At Indiana University, you can
contact your campus Support Center for
assistance.
- If, after using Add/Remove programs, any programs in the right
column above are still on your computer, you can try using the Norton
Removal Tool to remove them; for help, see the Symantec
knowledge base.
Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec virus protection software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff free of charge via IUware) for your operating system. Be sure to upgrade safely, update your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly. See In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?
