At IU, what is a virtual hostname, and how can I get one for my web site?

A virtual hostname is one that is substituted for the actual hostname in a URL, making it easier for visitors to find web sites by offering a shorter, more intuitive URL. The web server recognizes the virtual hostname and associates it with an alternative root document directory.

If you have an account on Webserve (www.indiana.edu, www.iupui.edu, www.iun.edu, or www.iuk.edu), you can request a virtual hostname for your account. The annual fee for this service is $125, billed at the start of service and each July thereafter for each unique address.

Note: Virtual hostnames are not available for personal home pages at Indiana University.
