At IU, where can I scan removable media for viruses?
Computers in the Indiana University Student Technology Centers (STCs) are continually updated with the latest virus profiles, so you can use Symantec/Norton AntiVirus (SAV/NAV) to scan removable media from any STC computer. Technology Center Consultants can also assist you in this procedure. For more information, see In the IU STCs, how do I remove a virus from a computer?
Occasionally, a virus can damage an infected file. Also, sometimes it is not possible to remove a virus, due to file corruption. In these cases, it may or may not be possible to recover some or all of the file, depending on the situation and the extent of the damage.
Note: The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you run the latest version of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus software (available to IU students, faculty, and staff for free via IUware) for your operating system, being sure to upgrade safely (see In Windows, how do I safely upgrade to the latest Symantec Endpoint or AntiVirus software?) and to update your virus definitions daily and scan your computer weekly.
