ARCHIVED: What is Pine?

Note: Pine is not available on any central UITS systems. UITS does not support the use of Pine at Indiana University.

Pine is a mail and Usenet client for Unix and Windows. Developed at the University of Washington, Pine is text-only and does not offer a graphical user interface. It does offer an easy-to-use menu interface, and supports MIME, IMAP, and PGP.

Pine's name was originally a play on "Elm", but has been redefined as the acronym "Program for Internet News and Email". Pine is not typically spelled in all capital letters, however.

For more on Pine, see the Pine Information Center.

Pine's successor is Alpine.
