At IU, can I use hubs, repeaters, or switches on the campus network?
The use of Ethernet hubs, repeaters, and switches on the Indiana University network is subject to the limitations described in the Extending the University Data Network policy:
Certain layer-2 devices, such as hubs and switches, are very common and pose little to no problems. Therefore these devices are exempt from the Device Registration policy. However, these devices should not be used to extend the IU network beyond the room of the data jack to which they are attached. For example, using a WAP, wireless repeater, or a very long cable to provide network connectivity to an adjacent building is not acceptable.
To prevent network problems, end-user Ethernet switches on the IU network must meet the basic requirements published by UITS. For an explanation of these requirements, and for testing instructions, see At IU, is my Ethernet switch compatible with the campus network?
For a list of switches that do meet the UITS requirements, see At IU, what switches are recommended for use on the campus network?
