At IU, how can I turn off messages for LISTSERV mailing lists that I'm subscribed to?

You can turn off your LISTSERV mailing list messages without unsubscribing yourself from a LISTSERV list. This feature is handy, for example, when you're taking a vacation and won't have access to your email. To temporarily stop receiving list messages, you may either send a command to the LISTSERV server via email, or use the web interface for LISTSERV management.

Using LISTSERV commands

To turn off your messages, send a message to the LISTSERV server, not the list address. Leave the subject line blank and include the following line in the body of the message, replacing listname with the name of the list:

set listname nomail

To turn your mail back on, do the same as above, but in the body of the message, type:

set listname mail

Note: For Indiana University LISTSERV mailing lists, send all commands to the appropriate address for your campus:

  Campus Server address
  IU Bloomington listserv@indiana.edu
  IUPUI listserv@iupui.edu
  IU Kokomo listserv@iuk.edu
  IU Northwest listserv@iun.edu
  IU South Bend listserv@iusb.edu
  IU Southeast listserv@ius.edu

Never send commands to the address of the mailing list (e.g., to  listname@indiana.edu ). Send only messages intended for members of the list to the list's address.

Using the LISTSERV web interface

You may also turn off messages via the web interface for LISTSERV management; see At IU, how do I access the web interface for LISTSERV list management?

To turn off your messages via the web interface, select Subscribers Corner, and then:

  1. Next to the list name, click Settings.

  2. Under "Miscellaneous", check Mail delivery disabled temporarily, and then click Update Options.

To resume receiving mail, uncheck Mail delivery disabled temporarily, and then click Update Options.
